Keoladeo Bharatpur & Chambal Sanctuary

Once a duck-hunting reserve of the Maharajas, Keoladeo National Park is a birding haven today. More than 375 species of birds call the national park their home. This includes some critically endangered species as well, in addition to several vulnerable species. In the past, the elusive Siberian Crane has been spotted here. The swamps and wetlands of the park also play host to a variety of mammals, such as the small Indian civet, Golden jackals, and Bengal fox.

Keoladeo National Park – Heaven for Bird-Watchers

Formerly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, it was first declared a national park in 1982. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, too, it is counted as one of the best national parks in India for bird watching. During the breeding season, you can watch a spectacular colony of Herons flood the trees here, which comprise 15 different species of Herons, including Spoonbills, Painted storks, and Ibis.

Spread over 29 square kilometers, the wetlands and grasslands offer the perfect abode in the Gangetic Plains to a large species of ducks, resident birds, migratory birds, and even the majestic Indian Python. You can even spot the Imperial Eagle and the Greater Spotted Eagle breeding here, two globally threatened species of birds. The beautiful Siberian Ruby Throat visits the park in the winter months.
